Where to? A meandering stairway opening a question to the future of Brunswick and its heritage of craft. Providing a moment of reflection along Regent’s Canal from a viewing platform, it also creates a beacon for Brunswick Wharf visible from further-reaching parts of Hagerstown.

  • The primary influence for the form is the unique jib and frame structure found in multiple examples on the site. Frames typically load at the end of members, whereas a jib is fixed to the middle of a structural beam. This is distinctive of crane typologies and represents the method of making in such an environment.

  • The structure is made of standardised elements, predominantly timber sections fixed together using joist hangers.

The primary timber columns are secured using steel footplates, placed above the structure of the supporting building below, removing the need for a secondary platform.

The area within the bend of the structure creates an opportunity for a semi-enclosed space by means of semi-transparent curtains that can be opened or closed, whilst at night the structure is lit upwards along its vertical columns.
